The abra crossing between Deira and Bur Dubai is Dubai's most authentic experience - a 5-minute ride on a traditional wooden boat across the creek for just 1 AED, operating exactly as it has for over a century. Abras depart whenever full (usually within 2 minutes of arriving at the dock) and the crossing delivers the creek from water level: dhows unloading cargo, the mosque minarets of Bur Dubai catching the light, the smell of salt water and diesel and spice. At 1 AED, it's easily the best-value activity in the city. The journey connects the Gold Souq and Spice Souq on the Deira side with the Textile Souq and Al Fahidi on the Bur Dubai side.
