Spice Souk

8.6(6,446 reviews)

Deira · Dubai - Al Ras - Dubai - United Arab Emirates

Deira's ancient covered spice market, extraordinary aromas, vibrant colour, entirely free to explore.

The Spice Souk in Deira is a feast for the senses - a vibrant covered marketplace where sacks of saffron, dried limes, frankincense, rose water, and dozens of exotic spices spill into narrow alleys. The aromas are extraordinary and the visual spectacle of coloured mounds of spice in the half-light of the covered lanes is one of Dubai's most photographed scenes. Browsing is entirely free, and traders will press samples and stories on anyone who shows genuine curiosity. Saffron here is a fraction of the supermarket price and significantly better quality; frankincense and oud chips, sumac, za'atar, and mixed Arabic spice blends all make excellent gifts. Prices are negotiable. Visit in the morning when the souk is most active and the light is best. Combine with the adjacent Gold Souk and a creek crossing by abra for a half-day of Old Dubai exploration that costs almost nothing.
