The Gold Souq in Deira is the largest gold market in the world - over 300 shops crammed under a traditional covered arcade piled floor-to-ceiling with 18ct, 21ct and 22ct jewellery in every conceivable design. The prices are transparent (set by daily gold price) and bargaining is expected on making charges. You don't need to buy anything to enjoy it - walking through the narrow covered lanes with gold glittering from every surface on both sides is a sensory experience unlike anything in the modern city. The Spice Souq is five minutes away on foot - sacks of turmeric, cardamom, dried rose petals and frankincense in an aromatic covered market that has changed little in a century.

Frequently Asked Questions

01Is gold cheaper in Dubai than elsewhere?
Gold prices track international rates, but making charges are negotiable and lower than in Western markets. The value comes from craftsmanship and volume.
02How do I get from the Gold Souq to the Spice Souq?
Walk south from the Gold Souq along Sikkat Al Khail Road for 5 minutes, or take an abra across the creek for 1 AED and walk from the Bur Dubai side.
