The Deira Spice Souk is one of Dubai's most sensory shopping experiences - a covered arcade of around 15 shops piled floor-to-ceiling with sacks of turmeric, cardamom, dried rosebuds, Persian saffron, sumac, baharat and every conceivable cooking spice, alongside traditional Emirati perfumes (oud, frankincense, rose water) and herbal remedies. The prices are genuinely competitive - a bag of good saffron from an Irani trader at 10% of the UK supermarket price is entirely achievable. Haggling is part of the transaction but most shops have fair walk-in prices. Best visited in the evening when the souq is busiest and the fragrant air is most concentrated.
