Narrow alleys wind between mud-brick and stone houses, the restored fort sits on a low hill with views across the Hajar Mountain foothills, and the traditional crafts museum inside the women's quarters provides a genuine window into Emirati mountain life before oil. Combine with Hatta Dam (15 minutes away) for a kayaking and heritage half-day. The drive from Dubai - through the Hajar foothills as the flat desert gives way to dramatic rocky mountains - is an experience in itself.
